     More about me...

    Xtragr8ful's question

posted on May 16, 2010 (modified on Oct 10, 2010)

Greetings everyone! I am new to this but I will try to tell you a bit about myself. I am a disabled, homebound, 53 year old mom/grandma to beautiful 7 and 8 year old boys. They are my grandson's, but I have adopted them to try to give them  a" better life".   I took them under wing at ages of 1 year and 1 week old, relatively.

Up until now, I have been doing okay by them. I am in the process of getting settled into a rental in Georgia. I came from Michigan, which I now find had much more to offer the disabled or low income family. I moved to Georgia after I found I have to have a leg amputated. I need to be near someone who can take care and nuture my boys during my hospitalization and my recovery.

However, since moving to Georgia, I have had to give up on many of the benefits I had in Michigan.  I have never experienced this type of poverty before!  Georgia is a state not inclined to help the poor or needy. I do not want to go on, talking about my woes, as most of you have heard so many crying out or have troubles of your own.  If you want to know more, please read my blog.  Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to read this profile page...please keep us in your prayers.

    warmest regards~

I am sorry for not replying sooner! apparently I am way behind.. In answer to your question..

There is a difference between SSI and SSD -

SSI disability benefits are payable to adults or children who are disabled or blind, have limited income and resources, meet the living arrangement requirements, and are otherwise eligible.  The monthly payment varies up to the maximum federal benefit rate, which may be supplemented by the State or decreased by countable income and resources.

SSD - is financed with Social Security taxes paid by workers, employers, and self-employed persons.  To be eligible for a Social Security benefit, the worker must earn sufficient credits based on taxable work to be "insured" for Social Security purposes.  Disability benefits are payable to blind or disabled workers, widow(er)s, or adults disabled since childhood, who are otherwise eligible.  The amount of the monthly disability benefit is based on the Social Security earnings record of the insured worker.

SSD - does pay dependent benefits

      SSI - does NOT

However, SSI can be supplemented by the State or federal government - in your case, you live in GA and may be able to receive a supplement from the state of georgia

unless the children are determined to be disabled, do not quailify for dependent benefits.

However, if you are receiving SSD benefits, then the situation changes.

disabilities that are eligible for disability benefits

      more information on disability benefits

      about adoptive grandchildren and benefits

I hope this helps... your case worker should be able to answer any questions you have more indepth - there is a ton of information online at SSA.gov as well...

I love your profile picture - that child sleeping so peacefully in your arms is so precious!

Have you applied for SS disability? You should receive a check for your children as well.... I am trying to think of what else you would qualify for, but I am really drawing a blank... (long day)  - I'm so sorry.. I will have to give this some research and get back to you...

in response to caroljc...   Whoa, slow down there, relax! LOL. I am not trying to kid anyone... don't have to. Who are you trying to kid? One day you're on here asking for charity yourself, the next you are putting people down with that nasty mouth who need help.

You poor bitter woman... Why would I waste my time trying to kid anyone? I do not see the relevancy between that the people you spoke of and myself. I have worked all my life up to the point in time of becoming ill and disabled. Yes, many do abuse the system! I still assert Georgia does not help its needy in the same capacity Michigan does. I am sorry if that upsets you but truth is truth!

Does your bible only speak of bastards, and nothing of charity or compassion? Did your bible not tell you it is wrong to judge? Ma’am, why are you visiting Aidpage ? This is a place for people who need people. I wonder, do you come to hassle the people who are in need or to wallow in others misery? This site is here for those who need help! It is not to be used to chastise or harass. I am sure there are other websites for people like you to "blow off steam" and talk about folks, without doing it here. That is not what this site was developed for. I feel sorry that you have nothing better to do in your life.

I can only hope your life becomes fuller, so you will not need to comment and try to put people who are less fortunate than yourself down.
